Tom was born in Ontario, in Windsor, as you may have known from the title of his book. He lived there from 1941 to 1951.
Ontario is a beautful place even though it is one of Canada's most populous provinces. Point Pelee National Park (left and left below) occupies the southernmost point in Canada, a peninsula which juts out into Lake Erie.
The Ambassador Bridge which connects Detroit, Michigan with Windsor, Ontario, is still the busiest international border crossing in North America. Above Linda (right) is joined by my sister Lynne and her husband Phil on the Windsor side of the bridge. Below is a view of the bridge from a dock in Windsor described in Windsor's Child.
Ridgetown, Ontario, (left) was the childhood home of Tom's mother, Edna Schott Parsons. She lived in the city from about 1912 until about 1920. Here my mother and Linda are about to enter the bakery owned by my uncle. This picture was taken in the early 1970s.
Tobermory, Ontario is a very small town at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula that has Lake Huron on the west and Georgian Bay on the east. A sailboat (left) sails on Lake Huron near Tobermory. |
