PART FIVE OF EIGHT PARTS

Christian belief that God will send people to Hell.

By Thomas M. Parsons

A loving God would not send anyone to Hell. In fact, a loving God would not create a universe that contained a Hell. If He truly loves the creatures He made, He would not make them suffer.

This is the common belief outside Biblical Christianity. This view is held by many leaders of churches identified as Christian. "You evangelicals," someone might say, "would be more acceptable to us if you would lay off the teaching about Hell!"

But can we do that? Are we free to decided what we must teach and what we must not? Of course not. As long as we are Biblical Christians, we must teach what the Bible says. And the Bible is emphatic about this. There is a Hell, and people will wind up there.

Hell is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament. Jesus taught about Hell. So did Peter and John. And although Paul does not use the word "Hell" in his writings, he does teach that there is due punishment for those who do not please God.

The fact is, according to the Scriptures, a loving God did create a universe that included a Hell.

The Bible indicates that Hell was not created for human beings, however. It was "prepared for the devil and his angels," (Mt 25:41) that is, for Lucifer and the angels who followed him in rebellion against God. Hell was prepared as an eternal place of suffering for Satan and his angel followers.

However, the Bible makes it clear that many human beings will also be cast into Hell.

The first two human beings to be cast into Hell are the beast and the false prophet who dominate the world during the Tribulation. Revelation 19 describes their fate at the end of the Tribulation (Rev. 19:20). This occurs just before the Millennium, the thousand years when Christ will reign on this earth.

After the thousand years, the devil, Satan, Lucifer will join the beast and the false prophet in Hell (Rev. 20:10), where "they will be tormented night and day for ever and ever."

Then comes the final judgment for all human beings who failed to have their names placed in the Lamb's Book of Life. Here is what Revelation 20:11-15 says:

Part 2. What do we mean by the term "Biblical Christianity?
Part 3. Arrogance of Christians who claim to speak for God.
Part 4. Christians condemn God's children, such as gays.
Part 5. Christians believe God will send people to Hell.
Part 6. Christians believe people as sinners need salvation.
Part 7. Christians believe in the authority of the Bible.
Part 8. The Christian response to these objections.

11. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and everyone was judged according to what they had done. 14. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15. All whose names were not found written in the book of life were thrown into the lake of fire.

As a Biblical Christian, I am not free to change the clear teaching of the Scriptures. Nor should I want to. The fact is, God showed His love to us by giving us a way to escape Hell. If a person's name is written in the book of life, he or she will not be placed in Hell. Ever.

How does a person get his or her name in the book of life? Jesus said:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

It is faith in Jesus Christ that saves people from Hell. Faith in Jesus Christ puts a person's name in the book of life. It is not homosexuality, murder, rape, adultery, stealing, pride, deceit, or any other sin human beings commit that puts a person in Hell. It is not believing in Jesus Christ as Savior.

Did a loving God create a Hell? The Bible clearly says He did. Will people wind up there? The Bible clearly says they will. Can I escape it? The Bible clearly offers me a way of escape. If I fail to put my faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, then my name will not be written in the book of life. All whose names were not found written in the book of life were thrown into the lake of fire.
