PART SIX OF EIGHT PARTS

Christian concept of sin and the need for salvation.

By Thomas M. Parsons

Sin exists only in the minds of religious fanatics who see evil in everything everybody else does, but don't see it in themselves.

Unfortunately, part of that statement may be too true. We do tend to see sin in others more quickly than in ourselves. That is a struggle for all.

But Biblical Christians did not invent the concept of sin. People are not sinners because Bible-believing Christians say they are. People are sinners because God says they are.

As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. (Romans 3:9-18)

Of course, people do not want to believe that some of the things they do are sin. The person who drinks alcoholic beverages does not want to believe that he is sinning, and the companies that manufacture alcoholic beverages do not want people thinking that using their product is sin. People who gamble do not want to think of their gambling as sin.

People who are proud do not want to think of their pride as sin. The adulterer, the murderer, the thief, the homosexual, the gossip, the liar, none of these wants to admit that these things are sin. But God says they are.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) If a person admits that he has sin in his life, that he is a sinner, then he feels the need for some kind of salvation from the penalty for that sin. Most of the world's religions are driven

by this sense of need. Most religions try to provide a means of salvation, usually through good works the individual does to try to overcome the bad works, the sin. It all becomes so much simpler, in the eyes of many, if we just don't see sin in our lives at all.

So today people argue that homosexuality is not a sin. They argue that there are many occasions where a lie is a good thing. Adultery is okay and even healthy. Stealing is okay if you have a strong need that cannot be satisfied any other way. And certainly no one should be punished for doing what he or she feels is the necessary thing to do.

But God clearly states that people are sinners. And then God declares His love for the sinner in offering the only salvation that actually does deliver from sin and its terrible penalty: faith in Jesus Christ.

Sin is real. It touches every human life with suffering, pain and loss.

Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is real. It restores the life lost to sin and creates a new creature who is able and willing by the Holy Spirit to worship and serve a loving God.
