PART EIGHT OF EIGHT PARTS

How is the Biblical Christian to respond to the rejection of truth?

By Thomas M. Parsons

If people reject the authority of Scripture, how can we ever possibly reach them for the Lord?

The answer is simple: we can't.

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:15, 16)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

We cannot reach an unbelieving world. But Christ can. He has the authority. He paid the price for sin. His love calls people to Him. He can reach an unbelieving world.

But He does desire to use His people in doing this. His command to us is to go. That doesn't necessarily mean that we have to pack our suitcases and take off for some far away place. Some He calls to do that, but all of us are told to preach the Gospel wherever we go. That means where I am now as well as where I might be next week.

We are told to go and preach, not our own ideas, but His Gospel. It is His authoritative message of love and deliverance through Him that is to be our one message.

We are told to go and preach to every one. We are not told to shy away from sharing the Gospel with those who reject it, or scorn it. Everyone we meet is someone who needs to hear the Gospel from our lips.

We are told to go and preach to every one because Jesus is always with us. He has not sent us out on an impossible mission alone. If He had, the mission really would be impossible to complete. But He has sent us in His authority and in His power to proclaim His truth. And He is with us every step of the way.

We were never told to save anyone, to convince anyone, to secure anyone, to convert anyone. That is His perogative. We are to go and tell in His power and authority and love.

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world. That is why the world hates you." (John 15:18)

The rejection of the authority of the Scriptures today really is not anything new. People did that in Jesus' day as well. And the world tends to hold those who speak of this authority in contempt. It is because we are not part of the world that the world hates us. But the world hated Jesus first. Hatred for Him does spill over onto His followers.

But we are to go and preach His Gospel to everyone anyway, even if they reject us and scorn us and refuse to listen to us. Some will reject. But some will be saved. That is His promise. And this work is to be done in His love.

Recently a youth group went to a small town to hold a Vacation Bible School for a small church. The young people outnumbered the people in the church. The family that lived next door to the pastor needed a fence. The son had secured some sheep for a 4-H project, and he and his father were building 1000 feet of fencing. It was slow going.

But the young people volunteered to help, and in a matter of two or three hours they had built 800 feet of fence for the neighbor. They did not do it to raise money for a project. They did not do it and then try to talk the family into coming to church. They did it out of love for Christ and compassion for people.

In the small town, word quickly spread about what the young people had done. As a result, at least one family was in church the following Sunday, not the family the youth helped, but another family who heard about their kindness.

Our need today is not to build fences of judgment and condemnation that exclude others. All of these things are true and all are Biblical, but they are God's responsibility, not ours. Our need today is to build fences of love that include others. Our job is to love people into God's arms where He can save them and deliver them from the sin that condemns and destroys them. Our responsibility is to reach out to a lost world of sinners and love them to the place where they will listen to what God says in His Word. This is not easy. It is very demanding. It is very time-consuming and labor-intensive - just ask the young people who built the fence!

But it is the only way to replace what people don't like about Biblical Christianity with what they can't resist.
